Elearning

Elearning (continued): The term “e-learning” refers to various degrees, certificates and informational courses offered through distance learning. Distance learning can be facilitated online, through distribution of DVD’s, or a combination of the two. E-learning allows adults to return to school, or study a topic of interest from their home, anywhere in the world. This is a perfect fit for working adults, parents of young children, military personnel and individuals living in remote locations.

The Distance Learning industry has blossomed in the last decade. With the advent of broadband internet access, and the refinement of distance learning techniques, programs offered through distance, or “correspondence”, include Associates Degree, Bachelors Degree, Masters Degree, MBA, Nursing Degree, Art Degree, even some PhD programs. The variety of programs is overwhelming, and when you begin to research a distance degree in your field, there are a number of issues to consider in choosing a program.

Due to the popularity of distance learning in the recent years, there are many “universities” offering these programs that may have little or no accreditation in your field or even as a legitimate institution of higher learning. It is important to research what type of accreditation body is active in your field, and confirm that the schools you are researching have received this accreditation. The cost and time involved in pursuing an advanced degree is substantial, and it will impact your career options if you receive a degree from an institution that is not highly regarded in the working world.

Costs vary substantially for distance programs as well. State run universities are generally cheaper, as is the case with traditional college campuses as well. Private schools are also offering online degrees now, however. Even very prestigious institutions such as Harvard, NYU and UC Berkeley are now offering various types of distance degrees and facilitate different techniques of e-learning.

Student loans are generally available for distance programs, though only if you are enrolled full time. Ask your counselor or admissions person if their university provides federal student loan programs.

The advent of Distance Learning has truly revolutionized the collegiate learning process. There are many life circumstances that make “going back to school” difficult if not impossible for many adults. These e-learning programs open up a world of possibilities in pursuing the degree you have always wanted, or achieving the certifications or education you need to further your current career.
